Marathi and Hindi typing without a Marathi keyboard

Most of us learned to type on an English keyboard, yet a marriage biodata, a wedding card or a message to elders often reads better in Marathi or Hindi. Hunting for the right Devanagari letters on a phone keyboard is slow, and the InScript layout takes weeks to learn. Phonetic typing solves this: you write "maze naav Priya aahe" and get "माझे नाव प्रिया आहे" in Marathi, or "mera naam Neha hai" and get "मेरा नाम नेहा है" in Hindi.

This page gives you a large, free typing box for Marathi typing and Hindi typing online, with suggestions to fix any word that comes out differently from what you meant.

How to use the typing tool

  1. Choose Marathi or Hindi at the top. Both use the Devanagari script, but spellings differ (for example शाळा in Marathi, ज्ञान in both).
  2. Type a word in English letters, just as you would say it.
  3. Press space, a comma or a full stop. The word converts to Devanagari.
  4. Look below the box. If the tool guessed a different spelling from the one you wanted, the other options for that word appear there; tap one to swap it in.
  5. When you are done, press Copy and paste the text into your biodata, WhatsApp or any document.

The word and character counters under the box help when a form has a limit. Your text is kept in this browser, so it is still there if you close the tab by mistake. Press Clear to start again.

What stays in English

Some things should never be converted, and the tool leaves them alone:

  • Words typed in ALL CAPITALS, such as MBA, CA, IT or B.E.
  • Email addresses and website names.
  • Numbers, including phone numbers.

So in Marathi mode "Priya MBA, Pune" becomes "प्रिया MBA, पुणे". If you want a whole sentence in English, untick "Convert as I type", type it, then tick it again.

How it works

The tool sends each finished English word to Google Input Tools, the same free transliteration service used by the text boxes in our biodata maker. The service returns the most likely Devanagari spellings for that word, based on how people commonly write it. The top result goes into your text and the next few become the suggestions you see below the box.

Because it works on whole words, not single letters, typing the complete word matters more than memorising letter codes. It usually gets common names, places and biodata words right on the first try. Rare surnames or village names may need a tap on a suggestion. It needs an internet connection; if the service can't be reached, your English text stays as it is and nothing is lost.

Spelling guide with checked examples

Each example below was typed into the tool and gave this result as its first choice.

SoundMarathi exampleHindi example
aa → आaai → आईaap → आप
sh → शshubh → शुभshaadi → शादी
chh → छchhan → छानchhota → छोटा
ksh → क्षshikshan → शिक्षणshiksha → शिक्षा
gy / dny → ज्ञdnyan → ज्ञानgyan → ज्ञान
n before a consonant → ंsanskar → संस्कारsanskar → संस्कार
shr → श्रshri → श्रीshrimati → श्रीमती

A few more tips:

  • Use "aa", "ee" and "oo" for long vowels when the short form gives the wrong word.
  • In Marathi, "l" in words like shala often becomes ळ automatically (शाळा).
  • If a name comes out oddly, try a slightly different spelling, then pick from the suggestions.

Where to use it

Write your biodata details in Marathi or Hindi here and paste them into the biodata maker, or type straight into its fields, where the same conversion is built in. You can also prepare the text for a WhatsApp biodata, a wedding invitation or a note to relatives. For more free helpers, see all biodata tools.

Frequently asked questions

Is this English to Marathi typing tool free?+

Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up. It needs an internet connection because each word is converted by an online transliteration service.

Can I type Hindi as well as Marathi?+

Yes. Switch between Marathi and Hindi at the top of the tool. Both use Devanagari, but the spellings and common words differ, so choose the right one before you type.

A word came out wrong. How do I fix it?+

Right after the word converts, other spellings appear below the box. Tap the one you want. You can also edit the Devanagari text directly.

Why did MBA or my email stay in English?+

On purpose. Words in all capitals, email addresses and numbers are left as typed so degrees, contacts and phone numbers stay correct.

Is my text saved or uploaded?+

Your text stays in your browser so it survives a refresh. Only single finished words are sent to the transliteration service to get their Devanagari spelling.
